Master Gardener: Succulent gifts from your garden | Home and Garden

Looking for an affordable gift made with love from your garden? How about a unique gift for the special gardener in your life? Or a gift for the hard-to-buy-for person who already has one of everything, Pay Per Touch?

You can easily make a number of gifts using succulent cuttings. Succulents are perfect for gardening “Central Valley Style” because they love the sun and are drought tolerant. Start now, and by gift-giving time, all your creation will need is a bright bow!

Some craft ideas are: a living wreath for hanging or for use as a table centerpiece with a candle, a living picture frame for a garden or patio wall, a fairy garden, a succulent globe, or a cute basket filled with different succulents. Making these gifts is affordable — no need to go searching the garden centers for succulents. Look no further than your own —or your friend or neighbor’s — succulent garden. Pinch a little here, trim a tad there, uproot a few that are too crowded, or rescue a forlorn “pup” from its parent.

Succulents are native to Mexico and South Africa. They have fleshy leaves and stems that hold and store water to help them survive drought. Most are frost tender, and they don’t like either overwatering or extreme desert conditions. Because succulents have a fairly thick skin, they are not prone to insect damage. Mealy bugs or woolly aphid are the more common pests but they are rarely troublesome and can be controlled by dislodging them off plants with water.

Starting/rooting succulents is fairly easy, but there are a few tricks of the trade to make it even easier. To root succulents with stems, cut them off the main plant and let them sit for 7-10 days to “harden off” or callus. This helps avoid fungal damage to the root. For more rosette-type succulents like aloe, agave and sempervivum, pull off the “pups” or “babies” on the sides and replant them.

Plant in clean moist potting soil specifically formulated for succulents. Hormone rooting powder is not necessary. Put the pots into a tray of water for a minute or two so the soil becomes saturated, then keep the plants just slightly moist. Resist over-watering at this stage. In the spring, all succulents appreciate some light fertilizer.

Be creative in mixing different succulents together to make a design. Just as in a flower arrangements, using different colors, leaf shapes and textures adds interest.

Here are a few general instructions for crafts:

  • To make a succulent wreath, purchase a wire wreath form, line with mesh, fill with soil, wrap with coco fiber, and insert cuttings in a variety of colors and shapes. If this is going to hang, you can wrap it with thin wire or fishing line until it’s sufficiently rooted to hold together.
  • Try making a succulent topiary with styrofoam, wire, plants and rocks.
  • You can build a short box, plant it with succulents and then put an old picture frame around the arrangement – a real Living Picture. This could be hung on a wall, or add legs to make a small table.
  • Fairy Gardens are the very latest design element. Using miniature accessories and garden accents, sedums, moss and pebbles, even tiny electric lights can turn a boring container into a Fairyland.
  • Succulent globes can be made by wiring two hanging baskets together, lining with coco fiber, then filling with soil. Poke holes in the fiber and insert succulent cuttings. Keep moist by light spraying until the cuttings are rooted (a gentle tug should not loosen the cutting if it has rooted) before watering the ball.

Search online for “succulent crafts” for more ideas. The possibilities for a gift of succulents are limited only by your imagination, and are sure to make your holidays Merry & Bright!

Half-Built Homes Plague China’s Beleaguered Real Estate Market

China is now home to tens of millions of half-built apartment buildings as the country’s real estate boom ground to a halt this year. The shifting market has dashed dreams of homeownership for many Chinese, who were only allowed to own private property 20 years ago, and shattered confidence in a sector in which the urban population has tied up most of its wealth. The meltdown mirrors the 2008 subprime mortgage crisis in the U.S., though with Chinese builders, rather than individual borrowers, facing loan defaults and other hurdles. Bloomberg

Goodwood, just north of Hobart, was ranked as the No. 1 suburb in the nation for having the quickest sales, according to Domain’s 2021 End of Year Wrap report. Property in Killarney Heights in Sydney’s northern beaches took just 10 days to sell, as did homes in Diamond Valley on the Sunshine Coast and Sassafras on the outer eastern edges of Melbourne. Summit County’s luxury real estate market remains strong headed into 2022

The reason why so many people are interested in purchasing a second home in Summit County isn’t a mystery. The area boasts plenty of recreational opportunities year-round, the scenery is impeccable, and it’s the first big stop along the westbound Interstate 70 mountain corridor, boasting four ski resorts.

These perks combined with the pandemic’s boost in remote working has created a hot real estate market in Summit County all year long — and especially so for the luxury market.

Jan Leopold, broker for Re/Max Properties of the Summit, said that in 2020, there was about twice as much inventory on the market than there is today, and in 2019, there was nearly 4.5 times as much as there is today. The low amount of inventory creates a strong seller’s market, and Leopold said many of these buyers are making cash offers.

According to data from the Summit Association of Realtors, Leopold said there were about 110 units on the market as of mid-November, and 63 of those were considered to be luxury or priced at $1 million or more. This means most of the inventory that is available is considered luxury.

In total, sales for luxury units were the strongest in the third quarter of 2021, according to Land Title Guarantee Co.’s monthly reports. The third quarter of the year raked in nearly $500 million in gross volume for sales priced at $1 million or more. Second quarter was close behind with about $420 million in gross sales. First quarter lagged behind at just more than $240 million.

Land Title’s reports show that Breckenridge consistently has the highest volume in transactions. However, Marc Warshawsky, Realtor for nationwide real estate firm Compass, said Silverthorne is usually a close second, followed by Frisco. Warshawsky said he believes Silverthorne’s strong market is due not only to the town’s growth, but also its prime location in the county.

“It’s very desirable from a lot of perspectives,” Warshawsky said. “Silverthorne has a lot of great views, and Silverthorne is right off of (Interstate) 70. It is the closest, easiest access to Denver, to the airport. It’s the first town you arrive to, and then if you’re not living in Breckenridge, Silverthorne is actually the most conveniently located to everything else.”

So far this year, Warshawsky’s biggest sale was a $2.8 million home with five bedrooms and 5.5 bathrooms in the Highlands at Breckenridge. He said most of his buyers are looking for homes in the $1 million to $3 million range and that most are not moving to the county full time but are looking for a vacation home. Similar to Leopold, most of Warshawsky’s buyers are coming from Texas, Illinois and Florida.

Leopold said about half her business is in luxury real estate. Her highest sale so far this year was a $2.7 million home with four bedrooms and 3 1/3 bathrooms in Breckenridge. She’s been selling in the county’s real estate market for over 20 years and said she’s seeing a change in the kinds of homes most desired as of late.

“Big is back. … We used to have the bigger homes before the Great Recession, and then people started looking toward smaller homes and building smaller homes,” Leopold said. “So big is back with the open floor plans designed for multigenerational gatherings, a compound that their extended family can come to for vacation.”

Like the more affordable residential real estate market, buyers might have to exercise patience if they are looking for a specific piece of property. Not only is there not as much inventory on the market, but according to the Summit Association of Realtors, the average number of days a unit was on the market in Breckenridge in October was 31, which is down 72{d4d1dfc03659490934346f23c59135b993ced5bc8cc26281e129c43fe68630c9} compared to the same month last year. The association reported last year that the average number of days a unit was on the market until it sold was 112.

Sarasota’s Luxury Real Estate Market Is Booming

Sarasota’s Luxury Real Estate Market Is Booming

Large, waterfront luxury home

It might be a chapter from the book of the obvious: Sarasota, with its luxury cars and mansions, has for years been known for its affluence. This year, however, that affluence has exploded and with it the demand for luxury housing.

The annual “A Look at Wealth 2021: Real Estate’s New Power Players” report, recently published by international real estate company Coldwell Banker, points to new standouts in the market and significant growth in real estate wealth from 2019 to 2021. Led largely by baby boomers, (ages 57 to 75), Sarasota was called out as one of its top three “Power Player” markets.

Due in part to the pandemic, affluent boomers gravitated toward locations that offer a balance of outdoor activities, luxury property inventory, a strong community of retirees and low tax burden. Sarasota, with its year-round sunny weather, thriving arts scene and relaxed, beachy charm, fit the bill.

As affluent Gen Xers battle it out for large, single-family homes in the suburbs, many boomers have cashed in on the equity of their primary residence and relocated to rural spaces and resort towns.

Nationally, the $1-million to $5-million range saw the highest number of properties sold. Today, nearly three times as many individuals with a $5-million-plus net worth own in that $1-million to $5-million real estate bucket, compared to 2019 – a 180 percent increase in luxury property ownership.

Sarasota numbers tell a similar story. More than half–60.6 percent–of properties in that price range are owned by baby boomers.

“In the last 12 months, 112 houses with more than a $5-million price tag in Sarasota and Manatee sold. The year before that it was just 23,” says longtime real estate agent Roger Pettingell of Coldwell Banker Realty in Sarasota, who specializes in luxury home sales.

In Sarasota County, houses in the $1-million to $5-million range saw a big uptick in demand: 2019 saw 466 properties in that price range sell, in 2020 that number grew to 735 and year to date, there have been 1,107. And those increases are expected to stay their course. It’s projected that by the end of 2021 there will be a 171 percent increase of sales in the $1 million-$5 million range (based on the rate of sales that occurred between January and August 2021).

The report also highlights trends in the luxury market, among them that of skipping out on the downsizing phase as a result of the pandemic.

Pettingell says the “less is more” movement has faded out. “Bigger and better” is the preference among his affluent clients.

“The memory of a pandemic is fresh, and people want office space, workout rooms and media rooms. They want home entertainment spaces and as much outdoor space as they can afford,” he says. “They also want room to host family. Many kids stayed with parents while colleges were shut down, and they want to be able to do that again. They’re also adding anything that makes the home your castle again, so items like resort-style pools are huge.”

Other than the weather and the low tax burden,” people are looking for family health and safety,” Pettingell says.

That’s why gated communities are popular and all the latest security monitor systems are a must. Many of his clients also want to be near a hospital and doctors’ offices in case of emergency.

There are more expensive homes to choose from these days, but that wouldn’t exist without demand. “We didn’t have that inventory before. Within the last five years, we just started having the product people want, like the Ritz Residences and The Epoch,” he says. “That’s why we’re seeing a lot of high-end building going up.”

Other top “Power Player” luxury real estate markets in the report include South Carolina Lowcountry; Scottsdale, Arizona; and Coeur D’Alene, Idaho. As the pandemic subsides, bigger cities like Chicago and San Francisco are also roaring back to life.
