Holiday decorations and tabletop trees

Is the thought of putting up a giant Christmas tree daunting? Are there more tasks in the day than hours? Are you and the family traveling for the holidays after spending the last months distancing? If any of these are true, then the thought of a Christmas tree and whole-home decorations for whatever winter holiday celebration works for you might be more than you want to handle. I love Christmas trees and all sorts of holiday decorations, but oh, the work!

It is a trend to reduce the size, kind and amount of decorating down for the holidays. There are many reasons to avoid a big fuss, including allergies, cats climbing trees, dogs chowing down on garland or candles, the mess of falling leaves or needles, and space issues due to downsizing homes.

Inspired by family, Costa Mesa Realtor re-creates citywide holiday contest from 1960s

Kendra Fisher was clearing out the garage of her grandparents’ Costa Mesa home during the pandemic, when she discovered a box of trophies and Daily Pilot newspaper clippings that shed light on a lesser-known part of her family history.

From 1959 well into the ’60s, John and Rosalie O’Brien were recognized as the winners of a citywide holiday decoration competition, even nabbing top prizes in an “Inter-city Yule Contest,” for large-scale displays that would have families lining up around the block just to get a glimpse.

“My grandpa was super creative — they built a train set and a huge rocket — people knew he was going to do something special, so they looked forward to going to their house,” Fisher said.

“I knew about it vaguely but didn’t realize the extent of it until I was cleaning out their garage,” she continued. “Then, I was like, wait, why don’t we do that now?”

A new member of the Torelli Realty team, Fisher decided to try and resurrect the contest by creating a brand-new holiday decoration competition in Costa Mesa.

“I feel like there’s this sense of tradition behind it, and tradition is so important in cities, neighborhoods and towns,” she said of her inspiration. “It’s an easy way to bring the community together.”

To help pull off the feat, Fisher enlisted the help from local business owners, including Ally Garvin, who owns Neat Coffee on Pomona Avenue. Together, the pair have been passing out fliers to let people know about the contest.

Families and individuals, or even entire streets, can enter the competition. But to cast an even wider net, judges have committed to driving through the streets of Costa Mesa on Friday, Dec. 10, in search of stunning holiday displays.

Individual trophies for Best Theme, Most Creative and Best Overall displays will be handed out Dec. 11 in a special ceremony and movie night with hot cocoa and refreshments at Neat Coffee. Winners will be announced at 6 p.m., and the movie will start at 7 p.m.

Garvin said she hopes to help Fisher create a new way for people from the local community to come together and celebrate.

“It sounded like a real fun to create a new tradition and make it feel a little bit more like a hometown,” she added. “A lot of people already decorate their homes for Christmas, and it brings so much joy to the neighborhood.”

In an interview Thursday, John O’Brien said he had no doubts his granddaughter would be successful in her attempt to resurrect, in some manner, the competitions of yore.

“She’s unique — she goes full speed ahead in everything she does,” he said.

He recalled the very first year he and his wife entered the citywide contest in 1959, having moved to a house on Costa Mesa’s Molokai Place from Glendale. He worked on the yard while Rosalie decorated the door and sewed clothes for the elves in the display.

Little did they know that decision would snowball into local fame.

“We saw an advertisement for it in the paper, so we got going on it and had really good success with it for a few years. It became like a tradition to enter,” O’Brien said, recalling the time he built a huge train in the yard.

“It had an engine and an open boxcar that had presents and toys coming out of it,” he said. “The locomotive had a smokestack with steam coming out of it and wheels turning. It brought joy to a lot of people.”

As for Costa Mesa homeowner Alli Talley, she, her husband, Bobby, and 1-year-old son, Jude, are all in. They’ve decorated their 19th Street home with lights and inflatables — all the things as a young married couple they sweared they’d never do.

“We’re just embracing it all. It’s so fun,” she said Friday. “I don’t think we’ll win any awards with what we have, but we’ll totally be in it.”

Those interested in entering the holiday decoration competition can call Fisher directly at (714) 606-3376 or email Kendra@torellirealty.com. Participants can also sign up at Neat Coffee, 1922 Pomona Ave., in Costa Mesa, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

YARD AND GARDEN: Change up your holiday plant tradition with amaryllis | Home & Garden

YARD AND GARDEN: Change up your holiday plant tradition with amaryllis | Home & Garden

Master Gardener Juanita Sherwood introduces you to amaryllis.

By now, Thanksgiving is over and your focus is on Christmas. Maybe you are one of those people who regularly buy a poinsettia or two for yourself, and some as gifts for friends and family. I like at least one for myself and have sometimes bought one of the newer varieties just for a change. I especially like the one that looks like it has been splattered with paint.

While poinsettias are a great tradition, there is another holiday plant that you might not want to overlook, both for yourself and as gifts, and that is the amaryllis. Amaryllis bulbs were brought to Europe from Africa in the 1700s, but our current amaryllis originated in Central and South America.

YARD AND GARDEN: Discover the eerie wheel bug

Amaryllis grows from a bulb. Bulbs can be purchased as a loose bulb in a bin at a garden center, in a box with an enclosed pot and potting medium, or from a catalog or online with a decorative pot that complements the bloom and also includes a potting medium. Select the largest bulbs available for more flowers. Make sure bulbs are firm and dry with no signs of damage, mold, or decay.

I was thrilled a few years back to find a bulb in a bin at a reputable garden center that displayed a lovely light pink bloom on a picture over the bin. Brought it home, potted it, lovingly cared for it, and waited for the plant to do its thing.

Guess what—when it bloomed, it was the same old red. It was a lovely plant, but a disappointment because I was expecting it to be a delicate shell pink. Guess loose bulbs can get mixed up from bin to bin.

YARD AND GARDEN: Interested in becoming a Master Gardener?

Amaryllis can come in white or many shades in the red/pink spectrum. Blooms can be trumpet-shaped, or in the case of double varieties, very showy blooms with extra petals and a variety of shapes. A few blooms have narrow petals that are tendril-like. Some blooms called picotee have a thin line of contrasting color outlining petals—think white outlined in red. Many blooms feature two colors such as burgundy and white.

Plant amaryllis bulbs in a container that has drainage holes to minimize root rot. The pot should be about one inch wider than the bulb and twice as tall. The potting medium that is sold in the boxed kits or that comes with a bulb and decorative pot is finely shredded peat. Avoid letting that dry out as it is difficult to rehydrate. When to top two inches of soil feels dry, water and let it drain freely.

A problem in making the plant its utmost in appearance is the stem handling the blooms, which get top heavy, can fall over. This can be taken care of in several ways: by purchasing a small diameter dowel rod and cutting it to size, by purchasing a commercially made amaryllis stake, or by using one of those arched bamboo pieces that come in vining plant pots from the nursery.

A clever stake in a catalog that I received this year looked like a ladder with Santa or a snowman ascending. That would likely put a smile on someone’s face.

To maximize the appearance of your amaryllis, you will need to turn it a quarter turn daily to encourage the stem to grow straight. Otherwise, the plant will seek the sun and grow toward it. Once the flower buds have begun to open, move the plant out of direct sunlight. Also, a houseplant fertilizer with high phosphorus content will promote blooming.

If you want to have amaryllis blooming during this Christmas season, you should be putting the bulb in a pot now as it generally takes 4 to 8 weeks for the growth/blooming process to reach fruition. You can get amaryllis to bloom again, but that’s a topic for another column. In the meantime, keep your amaryllis watered and enjoy their beauty.

First lady Jill Biden unveils her first White House holiday decorations

First lady Jill Biden unveils her first White House holiday decorations

East Wing communications director Elizabeth Alexander told CNN the idea for Biden’s theme was to showcase “things that unite and heal, and bring us together.” Biden and the East Wing began planning for the holiday decorations in early summer, narrowing the ideas and beginning to visualize how it would come to fruition.

In each of the public rooms of the White House — which remains closed to visitors due to the Covid-19 pandemic — there is an individual representation of the theme. The Library Room, with decorations of butterflies, reflects the “gift of learning,” while the Vermeil Room notes the “gift of the visual arts” with Christmas wreaths made of paint-dipped paintbrushes and a tree of Pantone color sample ornaments.

In the China Room, which displays the official china settings of previous presidential administrations year-round, a table was set “Nana style,” according to Alexander, a nod to Biden’s favorite family dinners, with centerpieces of candles and flowers. On the room’s trees, which had a “gift of friendship and caring” theme, ornaments of paper hands forming circles and stars hung, an idea that was also the first lady’s, said Alexander.

In the State Dining Room, two large trees were decorated with framed photographs of former first families at the White House during the holidays, and several images from the Biden’s private archive that have never before been seen publicly.

“The first lady spent the last several weekends when she was home in Delaware looking through photo albums and picking her favorites,” said Alexander.

There were photos from previous administrations, pulled from the White House archives: the Kennedys, the Clintons, the Johnsons, the Reagans — tucked on the backside of one of the trees was one small, framed photograph of Donald and Melania Trump.

A photo of former United States President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jaqueline Kennedy is displayed on a Christmas tree in the state Dining Room of the White House.

Though more subdued than in recent years — and minus controversies such as red trees — the display is Biden’s nod to tradition, and carrying on with personal touchstones, even as the country feels the impact of change and loss due to the ravages of Covid-19, says Alexander.

The fireplace in the State Dining Room features six stockings for each Biden grandchild, knitted by the same Delaware artisan as the actual Biden family stockings.

According to the White House, in total there are 41 Christmas trees, 6,000 feet of ribbon, more than 300 candles, and more than 10,000 ornaments.

However, the lack of the copious amount of decoration of the last several years is felt and seen. There are more bare corners, less in the way of fake snow and twinkling lights, the Christmas trees in the Cross Hall don’t graze the ceiling and are not bunched together. In the Green Room there are just two purple trees and a handful of purple orchid plants, one of Biden’s favored blooms.
A Marine White House Military social aide stands at attention in a hallway of the White House during a press preview of the White House holiday decorations.

A statement from the East Wing says the first lady was “inspired by small acts of kindness and experiences that lifted our spirits this year and throughout the pandemic.”

The annual White House gingerbread house — a 350-pound replica of the original that took executive pastry chef Susan Morrison and members of her team several weeks to construct — was accompanied by other smaller gingerbread and icing “buildings,” including a hospital, a fire station, police station, a warehouse and a school.

A ginger bread White House is seen in the State Dining room.

White House social secretary Carlos Elizondo told CNN the idea was to honor the front-line workers who have kept the country functioning. Elizondo added the first lady also wanted this year’s gingerbread White House to include something that had never been done before, so Morrison affixed a large, illuminated wreath to the top of the North Portico.

President Biden and the first lady took a look at the decorations Sunday night after returning from their Thanksgiving holiday in Nantucket, Massachusetts. Jill Biden placed the last (edible) figurine on the display: a tiny gingerbread teacher, propped next to a stair railing made of angel-hair pasta painted with black food coloring.

The entire display, save the board upon which it rests, can be eaten, said Morrison.

Holiday decorations are displayed at the White House.

On Monday afternoon, Biden will personally thank the 100-plus volunteers who hung the decorations over the last week. Many of them arrived prior to Thanksgiving to begin their work; by Sunday, it was “all hands on deck,” said Alexander, as the finishing touches were applied. Typically, volunteers from all over the country apply for the decorating positions, but due to the pandemic, this year they were only local to Washington, DC, said Alexander.
