YARD AND GARDEN: Discover the eerie wheel bug | Home & Garden

    November 22, 2021 /

Master Gardener Darla Chouinard introduces us to the eerie wheel bug. Recently, a neighbor posted a picture of a big scary bug on social media inquiring what it was. I promptly identified it as an assassin bug or a wheel bug specifically an Arilus cristatus (Linnaeus). I am familiar with the wheel bug, as I found a dead one at my house not long before. There are about 160 species of assassin bugs in North America but the cristatus variety is found only in the United States. Even though these bugs are terrifying, they are beneficial to the farmer and gardener. Their diet includes “pest insects” including insect eggs, leafhoppers,…

New normal? Seattle housing market shows signs of seasonal cooldown although inventory remains tight

    November 22, 2021 /

Seattle’s booming housing market continued to show minuscule signs of a seasonal slowdown last month, providing little, if any, relief to buyers according to Zillow’s latest market report which examined nationwide housing trends in October. The seasonal reprieve in the hot housing market began in September as prices began to stabilize from last year’s record gains. For the Seattle metro, the new report found the typical home value was $695,058 in October, up 21.8{d4d1dfc03659490934346f23c59135b993ced5bc8cc26281e129c43fe68630c9} — or $124,712 — compared to the same time last year. The report also showed that home value appreciation has slowed since September and continued to slightly ease last month. However, for-sale inventory remains historically low,…

Staggering new report: ‘A Look at Wealth 2021: Real Estate’s New Power Players’

    November 22, 2021 /

Today, nearly three times as many individuals with a $5 million+ net worth own $1–$5 million in real estate, compared to the numbers in 2019 — that’s a 180{d4d1dfc03659490934346f23c59135b993ced5bc8cc26281e129c43fe68630c9} increase in luxury property ownership. How did we reach such unprecedented growth in a three-year period? What power groups drive this demand, how do they redefine luxury and what should luxury real estate professionals know as they seek to serve clients in this new buying climate? Our team at Coldwell Banker Global Luxury® once again looked to WealthEngine, Wealth-X, and The Institute for Luxury Home Marketing to compile the data for “A Look at Wealth 2021: Real Estate’s New Power Players.”…

Strategists on investing in Asia junk bonds after Evergrande crisis

    November 22, 2021 /

High-rise apartment buildings at China Evergrande Group’s under-construction Riverside Palace development in Taicang, Jiangsu province, China, on Friday, Sept. 24, 2021. Qilai Shen | Bloomberg | Getty Images Asian high-yield bonds have been a hot favorite among institutional investors for the last few years. Also known as junk bonds, they are non-investment grade debt securities that carry bigger default risks — and therefore, higher interest rates to compensate for them. One recent high-profile example was the debt crisis at China’s Evergrande. Weighed under more than $300 billion of liabilities, the world’s most indebted property developer is teetering on the brink of collapse. Fears of a broader contagion to the industry,…

Haag: Give thanks for plants | Home & Garden

    November 21, 2021 /

BRITTNAY HAAG Everyone should add plants to their “thankful list” this year. Through photosynthesis, plants create oxygen in our atmosphere, which allows us to breathe fresh air. Also, directly, or indirectly, practically all food comes from plants. There are over 350,000 plant species in the world … we have a lot to be thankful for Benefit Group. As a horticulturist, you can imagine I love and appreciate plants. My career revolves around plants, but my life has always revolved around plants too. Growing up on a Central Illinois farm, my parents instilled a love of plants and growing things at an early age. Many plants deserve my thanks this year.…
